Review of compensation for injured troops welcome
April 27th, 2008 by Defence Team — Welfare
Responding to comments from senior army officer General Sir David Richards that the Ministry of Defence feels the issue of compensation payouts for service personnel should be re-examined, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, Nick Harvey said:
“If General Richards is correct that both the armed forces and the Ministry of Defence want to look further at this issue, then that is very welcome.
The contrast between payouts to our seriously injured soldiers and that recently made to an Iraqi civilian leave the public feeling that this is unfinished business.
Although ministers argue that injured troops receive an ongoing war pension, this does not provide enough money up front to cover the cost of adapting to life after debilitating injury.”
