Government must ban all cluster munitions
February 26th, 2008 by Defence Team — Disarmament, Cluster Bombs, Articles
Responding to today’s news that the Foreign Office has signed the Wellington Declaration, paving the way for a prohibition on the use of cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, Nick Harvey, said:
“Though any steps to limit the use of cluster munitions must be welcomed, we need a real commitment to banning all so-called ‘smart’ as well as ‘dumb’ cluster munitions.
“The Government refers to prohibiting cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm, but gives no explanation of what this means.
“All cluster munitions cause unacceptable, unnecessary and indiscriminate harm and should be banned without exception”

I regard this as a very importanr humanitarian issue. Britain should give a lead. Keep pressing the Government on this.
I think you are absoutely correct Nick, and Michael’s point (above) that Britain should give a lead is also significant. Across every relevant area of the British Government’s sphere of influence it is our moral duty to combat the dissemination and use of such purely malevolent devices.
Please rest assured we will continue to campaign on this issue!
We still believe that there should a total ban on ALL cluster munitions not just those termed ‘dumb’ by the Government.
